This initiative was created around the kitchen table...two houses burned down in our community on May 5 2018. This event was unprecedented but came on the heels of one of the worst fire summers (2017) in British Columbia. The summer that followed was even worse...so hot and dry that communities all over the province suffered. Despite the heat, Wasa escaped further disaster but residents began to worry about the future. A few of us visited a neighbouring community, St Mary's Valley, who had a community fire protection plan successfully in place. We wanted to follow their example so we began to meet in January of 2018 to figure out how to do that. (Read the Minutes of our meetings under the LIBRARY tab). We got the momentum rolling...received funding in 2018 to buy a community water trailer then followed up in 2019 by procuring funding to build a secure shelter for it and to buy more equipment. We have also worked hard to figure out a system to bring together a call-out system. Meanwhile, others in the community have gone the extra mile to set up water trailers to bring to a fire site as needed.
