2022 May 7 WILDFIRE COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS DAY CHIPPER DAY MAY 12 2022
30 Days of May 2020 FIRESMART BLITZ Holding an event during COVID-19 days was a challenge that called for an alternative to workshops or other public get-togethers. Despite the difficulties, we organized a very successful "virtual" event during the month of May and into June. Through posters, Buzz newsletter ads, and flyers door to door, we invited the public to tune in to the Wasa Community Facebook page for daily FireSmart tips and to ask a Local FireSmart Rep (of whom we have 4 on our board) to their property to help assess the wildfire hazard and advise how to set up water systems for home protection. The event culminated in another chipper day on June 5 (with 9 participants) and a draw for a free WASP Gutter-mounted Sprinkler System. We discovered that Facebook readers really appreciated the FireSmart information in small digestible chunks. OCTOBER 15 2019 CHIPPER DAY! Fourteen Wasa residents took steps to FireSmart their properties using the guidelines suggested in the Homeowner's FireSmart Manual. Free chipper service to dispose of woody debris was offered by the Regional District of East Kootenay for one full day.
July 7 2019 Community Wildfire Preparedness Day It was an all-day event, starting with updates about the local volunteer suppression program, then Alan Westhaver, FireSmart expert, walked everyone through the Homeowner's FireSmart Manual. After lunch (provided), participants had 3 choices for the afternoon: help a senior FireSmart their property, see demos of a home fire suppression set-up, or begin FireSmarting their own property. We put FireSmart into PRACTICE!
October 6 2018 Wasa Fire Prevention and Suppression Workshop Our first community event! This evening event included updates from the host group plus a FireSmart workshop presented by wildfire expert, Alan Westhaver. The event was sponsored by Regional District of East Kootenay and the Columbia Basin Trust, and hosted by Wasa Volunteer Fire Prevention and Suppression.
